I’ve always suspected it was evil and now there can be no doubt.) So I'm looking for opinions from people who LOVE THIS BOOK and would write a raving blurb for the cover. My favorite quote: “It seemed that if you listened to that snow hissing long enough, you wouldn’t just hear it telling you that it was waiting for you, you’d hear some terrible secret-a secret to turn your life black.” (Thanks, Peter Straub. I don't HATE it, but reading it feels like work because I want to remember every little detail and there are so many. I'm kind of curious about what's with this woman, but I swear I know the contents of the host's house better than my own house. They were just coming home and, I think, recognized a woman in town who shouldn't be there.Īt that point I just got distracted by a shiny new book and going back to Ghost Story seemed like I would have to start over and I haven't felt like it. Then I got to the point where it's the next morning and two of the men went to investigate some dead cattle on a farm. The ?girl's brother? staring into the window still creeps me out. I read up to the point where (spoilers I guess), the first ghost story about the schoolhouse was told and I have to be honest it was really creepy.

It just feels like Straub is trying to describe everything so that whatever Chekov's Gun becomes important later doesn't come out of nowhere, but also describes everything so the reader can't figure which part of that super detailed room is actually the "gun".Įvery book has a point where it's like, "okay it takes a bit of getting used to but if you're past page X and you're STILL not into it, then it's just not for you", and I'm just wondering if in your opinion I'm past that point with Ghost Story or if it's worth starting again. I love a slow burn, I love getting to know the characters before anything bad happens, but oof. So I know this book is infamous for its very slow start and dense writing, but that it really works itself into your brain.
